Brazil dances into Charleston (photos)
Dancers from the Brazilian troupe Bale Folclorico da Bahia took over the Charleston Ballet facilities for a workout on Wednesday. The troupe -- which calls itself the only professional folk dance company in Brazil -- found itself with a little extra time between last Sunday's show in Virginia Beach, Va., and this Friday's performance in Louisville, Ky. Kim Pauley, the Charleston Ballet's director, said the troupe asked to use the ballet's area to stay sharp.

According to the group's website, its 38 dancers, singers and musicians base their performances on "Bahian" folkloric dances of African origin and include slave dances, capoeira (a form of martial arts), samba and those that celebrate Carnival.
