St. Albans murder to be featured on TV show

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The police investigation into and murder conviction of a Nitro man who stabbed his female cousin to death in 2010 is the subject of a national TV crime show airing Sunday.

"Nightmare Next Door," a series on Investigation Discovery about murders in close-knit communities, will air an hour-long episode at 9 p.m. about the stabbing death of Stacie Ann Smith.

Timothy Ray Sutherland, Smith's cousin, was charged with stabbing her to death inside her St. Albans home on Dec. 30, 2010. Sutherland was convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence at Northern Correctional Center.

The episode will feature Marlene Hardwick, Smith's mother; St. Albans Police Capt. James Agee and Detective Kevin Elkins; Kanawha County Sheriff's Capt. Don Scurlock; Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Maryclaire Akers; and Kathryn Gregory, a reporter at The Charleston Gazette.
