MTV's 'Buckwild' renewed for second season

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- For better or worse, West Virginia has not seen the last of "Buckwild."

MTV officially picked up a second season of the reality show Wednesday morning.

Despite vocal disdain for the show among some area residents and politicians, the series -- which followed nine West Virginians in their early 20s as they drank, swore, fussed and fought, while occasionally engaging in various stunts -- grew a national following.

"Buckwild" earned consistently strong ratings for its Thursday night timeslot and among advertisers' favored demographic (ages 18 to 34). According to MTV, "Buckwild" pulled in an average of three million total viewers per episode, both in its original timeslot and subsequent rebroadcasts. It was the No. 3 cable series of the first quarter, behind MTV's "Catfish: The TV Show."

The audience numbers for "Buckwild" are comparable to "Jersey Shore," which debuted to 1.38 million viewers and grew to 4.83 million viewers by the first season's end (according to tvbythenumbers.com). Hour two of last Thursday's "Buckwild" pulled in 2.534 million viewers.

The season finale for "Buckwild" begins at 10 p.m. today. It's followed by a special of unseen moments at 11 p.m.

MTV was contacted and asked when the show would resume filming in the area. A representative for the network did not have that information.
