CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia International Film Festival kicks off on Halloween with one of the greatest horror films ever -- and one without a single spoken word. F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent classic, "Nosferatu," is a stylized and unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula tale. It screens at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 and 11:30 p.m. Nov. 3, at the Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers St.
Reviewer Roger Ebert noted that "Nosferatu" is Dracula before it got swamped in schlock renditions and that the vampire should come across "like a man suffering from a dread curse." He said, "Max Schreck plays the count more like an animal than a human being." The 94-minute film features an orchestral score by Hans Erdmann.
