Weekend symphony concerts spotlight Mendelssohn

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Symphony performs Mendelssohn's "Symphony No. 3 in A minor (Scottish)" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Clay Center in concerts that feature acclaimed violinist and Buffalo Philharmonic Concertmaster Michael Ludwig. Maestro Grant Cooper will also lead the symphony in Mendelssohn's dramatic masterpiece "The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave)," and Ludwig will join the group for Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major.

Tickets start at $12 for adults and $6 for students and children through the Clay Center at 304-561-3570 or www.theclaycenter.org.

Ludwig will lead a master violin class at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, 1009 Virginia Street E., for five solo performers.
