Harold Camping promised us the Rapture twice in 2011. He was wrong both times. But the Mayans have been (supposedly) predicting our fate since the 5th century B.C. The end date? Friday. We hope they're wrong, too -- but if not, let us help you ring in the apocalypse.

Take an ArtWalk

If you've always wanted to be cultured but never got around to it, you have one more chance at Thursday's ArtWalk, from 5 to 8 p.m. in 20 venues downtown.

Among the happenings, White Oak Photography, 807 Quarrier St., is having an ugly Christmas sweater party in addition to showing off new works by owner Michelle Krompecher; Taylor Books, 226 Capitol St., hosts book signings by West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman and author Colleen Anderson; Art Emporium, 823 Quarrier St., has Kathy Boland's "People and Parlors: An Afternoon at the Greenbrier," along with an artist talk at 6 p.m., and Delfine's Jewelry, 245 Capitol St., will have an assortment of chocolate diamonds on display.

Other venues are the Charleston Ballet, Chet Lowther Studio, Gallery Eleven, Good News Mountaineer Garage, House of Luxe, Ivor's Trunk, Mission Savvy, Modern By Design, The Purple Moon, Romano & Associates, Savvy Chic, Sky Lounge, Stray Dog Antiques, Studio 1031, Uncork & Create and Visions Day Spa. Visit www.charlestonartwalk.com to view or print a venue map.

Though not officially a part of ArtWalk, Apartment Earth, 223 1/2 Hale St., will host an artistic event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, as well. Amanda Jane, one half of the duo The Snake & The Pot, will dip her feet in paint and give an experimental dance performance on canvas while her partner, Duane Swanson, provides musical accompaniment. Todd Griffith's belly dance photography will be on display, too.

Dance like no one's watching

Well, of course people will be, but since the world's going to end shortly after you get your groove on, it's not like you have to worry about making a fool of yourself.

Thursday night try your hand at shag with the weekly dance sponsored by the Charleston Area Shag Society of West Virginia at the Charleston Moose Lodge, 2805 Kanawha Blvd. E. Admission is $6 for non-members. Call 304-722-5719 or visit www.wvshag.com.

On Friday, you can do some line dancing with the Good Time Country Dancers or the Extreme Country Dance Club. Good Time dances at the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, 6313 MacCorkle Ave., from 6:30 to 10 p.m. with a $5 admission. Call 304-545-6377 or 304-550-7144. Extreme Country dances from 8 to 10 p.m. (with lessons starting at 6:30 p.m.) at Elk Elementary Center off the Mink Shoals exit of Interstate 79 and also has a $5 admission. Call 304-949-3973, 304-549-0910 or 304-779-9109.

Rock out at an end-of-the-world party

The Charleston Cellar, 8 Capitol St., kicks things off with a special "Get Ready for the End of the World Third Eye Cabaret" from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday. Performers include Sierra Ferrell, Greg McGowan of Time & Distance, The BrotherSisters, Steve Clever, Donnie Smith and others. There will be a variety of spoken word performances as well. Admission is $1 or your best donation, with Mayans and survivalists with stockpiles of snacks getting in free. Call 304-932-5198 or visit www.facebook.com/thirdeyecabaret.

On Friday, Morgantown roots rockers The Recipe host a bash at the Sound Factory, 812 Kanawha Blvd. E. It starts at 9 p.m. and also features metal band BSC (whose full name we can't print here). No cover was given, but you can call 304-342-8001 to find out.

Over on the East End, The Empty Glass launches its End of the World Party at 9 p.m., too. It includes Godmode Broadway, Brain Trauma, the Dinosaur Burps, Time & Distance, Patterns of Force, Conspiracy Entertainment and more. The cover is $5. Call 304-345-3914 or visit www.emptyglass.com.

At the Fairplain Yacht Club in Ripley, the Davisson Brothers Band ushers in the apocalypse with Party Like It's No To-Maya, starting at 9 p.m. Matt McGuire opens the show, and there's a high probability that DBB BFF Owen Schmitt will be there as well. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Call 304-372-8918 or visit www.fairplainyachtclub.com.
