So, for those attending graduation, recitals -- or any performance, for that matter -- please remember the following:

  • Save your cheers and applause until the end of the ceremony.
  • Do not block the view of the stage or performance area.
  • Avoid texting. The glow from the phone in dimly lit areas, as well as the constant "pecking" noise created while texting is very distracting. In fact, just turn your cellphone off.
  • Refrain from talking during the ceremony or performance. If you must talk, do so in a whisper. Avoid the mean and catty remarks about other grads or performers. People can and do hear you!
  • Avoid bringing small children. If you must, then please take them to another area if they become restless or noisy.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Do not bring an air horn!
  • Remember that these young people have worked very hard for their moment in the limelight. Show them diplomacy when they receive their diploma.
