Downtown ArtWalk

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Downtown ArtWalk will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday with the following venues participating:

  • The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation features 29 limited-edition pieces of Deborah Herndon's work including photographs of French and Spanish architectural details and urban landscape. Michelle Krompecher of White Oak Photography will showcase an exhibition of select images from her most recent travels, observations and experiences.
  • The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation is a new venue for ArtWalk and is at 1600 Huntington Square (16th floor of Huntington Bank Building), 900 Lee St. E.

  • Good News Mountaineer Garage Gallery will feature art from students at Mountaineer Montessori School. The fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade art students have spent the past two months creating woodblock prints, drawings, mosaics, paintings and sculpture depicting the deaths of miners at the historic Hawks Nest Tunnel. The students' work will be for sale and the proceeds will go to an educational component of the Hawks Nest Tunnel Project. The students were motivated after speaking with David Pushkin, a filmmaker who visited the school in the spring.

  • The Art Emporium will feature "Friends Among the Hills," paintings by Emily Roles and wire jewelry by Sue Chase. Roles and Chase are longtime friends. Roles' acrylic paintings on paper feature a variety of colorful West Virginia landscapes. Chase combines beads with wire in her designs to make one-of-a-kind jewelry. The show runs through May 12.
  • The Art Emporium, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 823 Quarrier St.; www.artemporium.net or 304-345-2787.

  • The Charleston Ballet Downtown Dance Studios will host photographer KD Lett's new series of dancer portraits and videos. Register for a free drawing for a surprise grab bag filled with various gift items valued at more than $175. Watch dancers as they prepare for upcoming performances.

  • The Purple Moon will host members of the West Virginia Allied Artists for a group show for ArtWalk. In addition to the Allied Artists, works by other national, regional and local artists are featured.

  • At the Chet Lowther Studio, Lowther will show new works in encaustic, oil and acrylic.

  • Taylor Books Annex Gallery will feature assemblage and mixed-media works by Robert Villamagna. The artist's work has been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Andy Warhol Museum, the Mattress Factory, ARC Gallery (Chicago), the Ohio Craft Museum, the Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University, and Robeson Gallery at Penn State University. Three of Villamagna's works are in the state of West Virginia's permanent collection.
