This 3,000-pound pneumatic hammer, made in Chambersburg, Pa., in 1937, sits in the center of Jeff Fetty's blacksmith shop. Fetty uses the machine to create his metal sculptures, gates and fences.

Fetty is the only American featured in Metall Design International 2012, an annual book highlighting the works of premier metal designers around the world.
