July Fourth at Stonewall

WESTON, W.Va. -- Stonewall Resort has planned a full week of activities for guests for the Fourth of July celebration.

General manager Mike Hager said the resort will present fireworks displays on June 30 and July 7. The events are open to the public with a $5 park entry fee. Guests can watch the fireworks from the new pedestrian boardwalk that spans Stonewall Jackson Lake.

During the day, overnight guests can enjoy cruises on the lake. Canoes, kayaks and pontoon boats may be rented. Segway tours are also available. Golf is available on the Arnold Palmer Signature Course.

Guests who book three consecutive nights by June 30 will receive a $100 resort gift card.

July Fourth at Camden Park

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The traditional "Fantastic Fireworks" will begin at 10 p.m. July Fourth at Camden Park, off Interstate 64 in Huntington. Earlier in the day, Jabberwocky will play two shows, at 3 and 7 p.m.

The park has more than 25 rides and attractions, plus games, an arcade, paddleboats and 18-hole miniature golf. Its newest ride, The Rattler, opens the first week of July.

There will be a 50 percent discount on regular general admission for all members of the military (show military ID at the admission booth).

Staats and symphony

DAVIS, W.Va. -- The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra with special guest Johnny Staats will perform at the 22nd Annual Celebration of the Arts in a free 3 p.m. concert on July 1 at a natural outdoor amphitheater at the Canaan Valley Resort ski area.

Featuring Music Director Andre Raphel, the symphony will perform a program containing well-known favorites, including "Country Roads," Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Washington Post" marches, Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" and "America the Beautiful," to name a few.

Staats will perform with the orchestra for about six numbers including "Jessica's Lullaby," "Catch Me If You Can" and "Escape From Taiwan."

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and sun protection.

Although there is no admission charge, donations will be accepted. Canaan Valley Resort will offer food and beverage concessions onsite.

Wine and dine train ride

PETERSBURG, W.Va. -- The South Side Depot in Petersburg will feature West Virginia wines and foods on a "Summertime in the Mountains Dinner Train" ride July 14.

Passengers on the train will begin their journey with a wine tasting of West Virginia wines at the depot from 3 to 5 p.m. The wines will be available for purchase -- bring your wine on the train to have with your meal. Boarding will begin shortly after the tasting. Dinner will be served during the 2 1/2-hour ride as the train winds along the scenic South Branch of the Potomac River.

Pittsburgh Doo Dah Days

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh will celebrate Stephen Foster, America's first professional composer, during Doo Dah Days: Stephen Foster Music and Heritage Festival, July 14. Tourists can take a trolley through the historic Allegheny Cemetery, located in the neighborhood where Foster was born and is buried.

Throughout the day, musicians will play in honor of Foster, considered the founder of pop music for writing such songs as "Oh! Susanna" (1848), "De Camptown Races" (1850) and "Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair" (1854).
