Deborah Victorson, co-president of the Charleston Chapter Hadassah, received the annual Hadassah National Leadership Award for her leadership in volunteer activities.

Selected by her peers, Victorson was integral in Hadassah's "Taste of Jewish Cuisine," is active in ReadAloud and the Ladies Auxiliary of B'nai Jacob Synagogue.

Victorson receive the award June 24 at the organization's donor brunch.

Bean stringing benefit

The annual "Bean Stringin' " to provide produce for Manna Meal will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 21 at Capitol Market.

Market patrons are invited to join the Manna Meal Soup Kitchen and Community Garden volunteers in stringing beans to be canned and served in coming months to the hungry who are fed at Manna Meal.

Those who take part are encouraged to buy a pound of beans to string and then donate. As the crowd strings beans, they are entertained with live music. Raffle prizes are given out.

Last summer, 508 pounds of beans were strung.

HospiceCare benefit

A wine tasting and dinner to benefit HospiceCare will be presented by Falcor Wines and Bridge Road Bistro from 5 to 8 p.m. July 22 at the Bistro, 915 Bridge Road.

The menu includes stuffed breast of chicken, Parmesan and truffle scented risotto, vegetable medley and chocolate decadent cake.

Bank gives to food bank

GASSAWAY, W.Va. -- Huntington Bank donated $10,000 to the Mountaineer Food Bank to assist the Food Bank and its network of feeding programs throughout the 48 West Virginia counties it serves.

Earlier in the week, the executive director of the Food Bank said its pantries were at a critical level because so many families lost massive amounts of food spoiled during the power outages.

Carla Nardella said, "We very much appreciate this donation from Huntington Bank because it will allow us to begin restoring the food supplies in the 600 plus feeding programs that so many of our residents depend on daily."

Animal rescue hosts events

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- New Hope Animal Rescue will hold several events on July 28 both at Paws and Shop thrift store at 2806 Putnam Ave. and at John Henson Senior Center at 2800 Putnam Ave.

Paws and Shop will have a Customer Appreciation Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., serving free hotdogs, chips, drinks and desserts. Door prizes will be given.

The thrift shop sells donated goods to support New Hope Animal Rescue, a non-profit, all volunteer, no-kill foster/rescue group.

Next door at the senior center, portraits of pets and their owners will be taken from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Photo packages at various prices will be offered. Appointments are not required, but are suggested. Call 304-562-0300.

Also, a clinic to insert microchips in pets will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the center. Cost is $25 per pet. The tiny chips contain an identification number that can be read by a scanner used by shelters, veterinarians and other agencies, so pet owners will be contacted if their pet is lost.

Eggplant discount for food

Eggplant gift shop on Bridge Road is offering a 10 percent discount on any item in exchange for nonperishable food items or monetary donation to go for those in need.

Suggested items include: Soup, peanut butter, oatmeal, cereal, tuna fish, canned fruits and vegetables, juice, vegetable oil, rice, pasta, dry milk, crackers and diapers.

Drop the items off at Eggplant and store personnel will deliver them to local food pantries. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Call 304-346-3525 for more information.
