Food notes: July 18, 2012

Sit and string

Purchase a mess of green beans and sit a spell to string them at Manna Meal's annual Bean Stringing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday July 21 at Capitol Market's Center Court. All strung beans will be bagged and frozen for use by Manna Meal's Soup Kitchen. Last year, volunteers and donors strung 508 pounds. Capitol Market, 800 Smith Road.

HospiceCare benefit

Bridge Road Bistro will hold a Wine Tasting and Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday July 22 to benefit HospiceCare. The tasting will feature Falcor Wines served with a summer salad, chicken breast stuffed with wild mushrooms and pancetta, Parmesan and truffle risotto, vegetable medley and warm chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Cost is $50 per person, which includes a $25 benefit to HospiceCare.

  • '80s murder mystery dinner --  July 27 and July 28, $40
  • Wine dinner --  Aug. 25, cost not available
  • Western murder mystery dinner -- Aug. 17 and Aug. 18, $40

Wine awards

Eight West Virginia restaurants received an Award of Excellence by Wine Spectator in recognition of the wine list and food pairings. West Virginia winners are: The Chop House and Bridge Road Bistro, Savannah's Restaurant in Huntington, Provence Market in Bridgeport, Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, Final Cut Steakhouse in Charles Town, Spats in Parkersburg and The Regatta Bar & Grille in Morgantown.

Thai basil tip

Substitute common Italian basil and fresh mint springs when a recipe calls for hard-to-find and pungent Thai basil.
