Midwife/author at KCPL
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Midwife Patricia Harman will talk about her recent novel, "The Midwife of Hope River," at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 in the John V. Ray Room, Kanawha County Public Library.
Harman has spent more than 30 years caring for women as a midwife. She has written memoirs about her experiences.
Her novel, released last month by William Morrow Paperbacks, is centered on a midwife in the coalfields during the Great Depression.
Bridge disaster book
POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- The collapse of the Silver Bridge across the Ohio River has been recounted in an Images of America book, "The Silver Bridge Disaster of 1967." The paperback will be available for purchase beginning Oct. 1 at the Point Pleasant River Museum.
Built in 1927, the bridge collapsed on Dec. 15, 1967. Authors Stephan Bullard, Bridget Gromek, Martha Fout and Ruth Fout weave together period photographs and witness accounts in retelling the tragedy that killed 46 people.
A reception will take place at the museum on Dec. 15, the 45th anniversary of the disaster. The authors will sign copies of the book. The book will sell for $21.99 plus tax; there will be a small charge for postage if mailed. With a credit card, the book can be purchased by phone at 304-674-0144.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Anna Schles won the Reel Teens book trailer contest recently sponsored by Kanawha County Public Library. She won the $100 first prize for her interpretation of the story "Araminta Ditch" from the book "A Spaniard in the Works" by John Lennon.
Lauren Coccari's trailer for "The Crossroads," by Chris Grabenstein, won her $50 for second place. The third-place prize of $25 went to Austin Susman for his "Captain Underpants" trailer, based upon Dav Pilkey's books.
All prizes were provided by the Friends of the Library Foundation of Kanawha County.
Book launch party
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A launch party for Colleen Anderson's new book will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29 at Taylor Books.
"Missing: Mrs. Cornblossom" is a children's chapter book. The book's cover says that a whole neighborhood misses Edna Cornblossom: "Welcome to Arlington Court, where a trio of 10-year-olds, two eccentric adults and a mischievous calico cat discover that, together, they carry their friend's beloved memory forward in their own lives."
The book is aimed at readers ages 8 to 12, but also appeals to younger children when read to by an adult.
Anderson is a writer of adult fiction, songs and poetry. She is a regular essayist for West Virginia Public Radio, and teaches creative writing classes at Cedar Lakes Crafts Center and at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, N.M.
The paperback book is published by Quarrier Press and is available for $9.95 at West Virginia bookstores or from www.wvbookco.com.
'Animal Farm' discussion
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "Animal Farm," by George Orwell, is the subject of two book discussions.
Jim Lewis, longtime political activist and minister, will discuss the political concepts Orwell put forth in his novel at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Kanawha County Library. The talk is for adults and teens.
Carol Campbell will lead the discussion as a kickoff to Banned Books Week at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at Taylor Books.
"Animal Farm" was banned in the former Soviet Union until the 1980s for being anti-communist, but it also was banned in the United States for the pro-communist text in its introduction.
Copies of the book are limited, but may be picked up at the reference desk at the Main Library.
