BEVERLY, W.Va. -- Beverly Heritage Center introduces Lantern Tours Oct. 13 and 27 led by Beverly resident Karl Mulac and other docents in period costume. Lantern Tours will explore the darker side of Beverly's historic district. Tours will leave from the Beverly Heritage Center each evening at 7:30 p.m. and will last about an hour and a half. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for Beverly Heritage Center members and children under 12.

The Beverly Heritage Center is located in the center of Beverly, six miles south of Elkins.

Candlelight Tour and Dinner

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- Tickets are available for the annual candlelight tour of the reconstructed Blennerhassett Mansion on Blennerhassett Island on Oct. 12 and 13.

Costumed re-enactors let visitors experience social life of 200 years ago when Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett built their mansion on the wilderness island in the Ohio River in 1800. Music, dance and card games of the era will be re-created.

After debarking from the sternwheeler, hundreds of lanterns will light the gravel paths leading to the mansion. A harvest dinner will be served at the picnic pavilion and other food concessions will be offered, as will rides on horse-drawn wagons.

Reservations are required for the boat trip and tour; $25 for adults, $17 for children. The harvest dinner is $15 for all ages, with reservations due by Oct. 4. Call 304-420-4800.

The boat departs from the Blennerhassett Museum, Second and Juliana streets, on the half-hour from 6 to 8 p.m., and departs the island on the half-hour from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Seasonal change in photos

THOMAS, W.Va. -- Joe Henry's photographic exhibit "Canaan Valley and Dolly Sods Fall Color: Seasonal and Weather Transitions" will be at Cottrill's Opera House in Thomas through Oct. 26. The photographs capture the rapidly moving weather fronts and weather changes that are so common to Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley.

A collection of photos that depict the effect of season and weather transitions will be displayed at Cottrill's Opera House on Front Street in Thomas from Sept. 19 to Oct. 26.

Much of the beauty observed at Dolly Sods and the Canaan Valley region occurs at boundaries between plant ecosystems, weather fronts and seasons. These photographs depict sequences that bring these changes to life and will emphasize fall colors.

Joe Henry lives in Canaan Valley and has been photographing landscapes there for 30 years.

Black Walnut Festival

SPENCER, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Black Walnut Festival will run Oct. 11-14 in Spencer. Events include a parade, art and photo show, 4-H exhibits, high school band competition, quilt show, car show and a baking contest featuring black walnuts.
