Meal on Wheels

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Meals on Wheels Inc. needs a volunteer to drive for the West Side hill area on Tuesdays. The route takes about an hour. If interested, call Helen C. Scragg at 304-346-5104.

Meals on Wheels is a volunteer, nonprofit service organization that provides meals to the homebound, elderly, convalescing, handicapped or chronically ill who are unable to prepare their own meals. Meals are delivered five days a week, including holidays.

Pantry needs canned goods

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Covenant House/Manna Meal Food Pantry is in desperate need of canned fruit and canned meats such as tuna, chicken and salmon, as well as any staple items. Drop off items between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and between 9 a.m. and noon and 1 and 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the pantry, First Presbyterian Church, Leon Sullivan Way and Virginia Street East.

Volunteers are needed for the 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and for the 1 to 3 p.m. second and fourth Thursday shifts. Drivers with a van or small truck to pick up food for Manna Meal are needed at 10 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Drivers transport food to the pantry and help stock the shelves and refrigerators. Walk to End Alzheimer's

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Registration is 9:30 a.m. Oct. 27 for the 2012 Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer's, which starts at 10:30 a.m. at Appalachian Power Park, Charleston.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's is the Alzheimer's Association's signature fundraising event. An estimated 48,000 West Virginians are living with Alzheimer's disease.

Teams and individual participants can register online at www.alz.org/wv or by calling 800-272-3900. The local walk committee has set a goal to raise $120,000 for the Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter. Registration for the walk is free; however, participants are encouraged to raise $100 to earn a commemorative Walk to End Alzheimer's T-shirt.

The day will feature food, prizes and the opportunity to celebrate loved ones lost to Alzheimer's.

Pumpkins in the Park

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Junior League of Charleston's annual fall fundraiser, Pumpkins in the Park, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Capitol Complex. Proceeds from the fundraiser support the Junior League's community activities.

Admission is free, but tickets are required for some events. All-day wristbands are $10.

Registration for the 5K run/walk starts at 8 a.m. Children's activities include games, a fun run and a bounce house. Family Zumba and yoga, bake sale and basket raffle will be held.

Fundraisers such as Pumpkins in the Park allow the Junior League of Charleston to help support projects such as the NICU Family Support Center, West Side's Bob Burdette Center, Ronald McDonald House, Sojourner's Shelter for Homeless Women and Families, Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, Daymark and Vandalia Housing.
