Chics for Charity

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A "Holiday Survival Evening" will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 by the Chics for Charity with the Foundation for Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis hospitals.

The event is hosted by Holiday Inn & Suites, 400 Second Ave., South Charleston, where the event will take place.

Guests are encouraged to de-stress the holidays with "fun and fabulous ideas, decorations, recipes, gifts and fashion."

Hors d'oeuvres and cocktails will be offered.

Seating is limited. Admission is $50 for Chic members and $75 for new Chic members, which includes a lifetime membership and new member gift.

Chics for Charity uses proceeds from its events to support projects and programs that ultimately benefit patients of Saint Francis Hospital. Fundraisers are held three times a year and vary from social events to educational forums.

Men's shelter needs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Crossroads Men's Shelter needs the following items:

Toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, shampoo, detergent and large-size non-latex gloves.

Items may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the shelter, 503 Leon Sullivan Way.

Sing for child center

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The sixth annual Charleston Choir Festival will take place at 3 p.m. Nov. 11 in the sanctuary of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 900 Washington St. E.

Each choir will sing two selections that represent their church's denomination. A combined choir benediction also will be offered. The concert is free and open to the public. A light reception will follow.

Each choir has paid an entrance donation and a collection will be taken at the performance. All money collected will go directly to the Davis Child Shelter.

Participating choirs are: Canaan United Methodist Church, Charleston Baptist Temple, Emmanuel Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Timothy Lutheran Church and St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

Greenbrier fundraiser

LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- The Greenbrier Historical Society will hold its annual fundraiser, "Stellar Evening," at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Greenbrier Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, 200 W. Washington St.

The evening of dancing, food and holiday fun includes a silent auction of items donated by local restaurants and merchants.

FOOTMAD helps Manna Meal

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha Valley Friends of Old Time Music and Dance is holding a drive this month to help Manna Meal, Charleston's largest soup kitchen.

Anyone who brings a needed item will get a $5 discount on admission to the contra dance at 8 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Columbia Gas auditorium, and the Ernie Hawkins concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Culture Center Theater.

Items for donation include canned meats and fish -- Spam/Treet, chicken, Vienna sausages, ham, potted meat, salmon, clams, oysters -- or canned fruits with flip-top lids. Men's clothing also is requested: gloves, wool socks, hats, jeans or warm pants sizes 28 to 38. Items should be new or in good condition.
