DuPont Middle in top 3

PITTSBURGH -- DuPont Middle School, in Belle, W.Va., was among the top three schools in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia to collect money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

DuPont students collected $4,790 of the $99,000 raised through Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies program. Students filled collection jars and boxes with spare change during a three-week period. The top fundraising class at each participating school received a pasta party from their local Olive Garden restaurant.

Nationwide, about $10.7 million was raised to help fund blood cancer research and provide needed services and support to leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma patients and their families.

Gift bags for shelters

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- The Putnam County Chapter of the West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women Inc. recently more than 70 gift bags during its holiday luncheon meeting.

The bags containing toiletry items, socks, gloves, scarves and winter hats were distributed to needy individuals at the Veterans Homeless Shelter and West Virginia Rea of Hope.

The deadline for submissions to Help Out is noon Wednesday for the following Sunday.
