CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Gallery Eleven is accepting entries through Jan. 8 for its "Crazy Eights" exhibit. All works must be a maximum size of 8 inches by 8 inches and will be for sale for $88. Entry fee is $5. There is no jurying.

The exhibit is up Jan. 12 through Feb. 23.

Socialist Party history

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Labor historian Fred Barkey will present "The Socialist Party in West Virginia" at 6 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Archives and History library at the Culture Center. The program is free.

The West Virginia Socialist Party was established in Wheeling in 1901. By 1912, more than 15,000 West Virginians voted for Socialist presidential candidate Eugene Debs.

Socialists were prominent in several craft trades, including glass- and cigar-making, and proved popular with coal miners in the Paint Creek-Cabin Creek Strike of 1912-13.

For his doctoral research, Barkey examined the rise of the Socialist Party in West Virginia through its decline during World War I. Barkey received a doctorate in history from the University of Pittsburgh. He is professor emeritus at West Virginia Graduate College and also taught history at the University of Charleston and the Institute for Labor Studies at West Virginia University.

Barkey is the author of "Cinder Heads in the Hills: The Belgian Window Glass Workers of West Virginia" (1988) and "Working Class Radicals: The Socialist Party in West Virginia, 1898-1920" (2012).

Dance festival sign-up

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Dance company/school directors in West Virginia have until Jan. 7 to enroll their students in the West Virginia Division of Culture and History's State Dance Festival April 19-21.

Company/school directors have until Monday to submit applications; scholarship and dancers' applications are due by Jan. 18. Adjudications are scheduled for Feb. 15-17.

The West Virginia State Dance Festival showcases the talents of West Virginia dancers and offers classes by nationally acclaimed dance instructors.

Student applications will be accepted only from directors affiliated with full-time dance establishments in West Virginia.

Big-screen opera

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. -- The high-definition encore of the opera "Un ballo in maschera" ("The Masked Ball"), by Verdi, will be shown from 6:30 to 10:15 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Cinemark Theatres in the Huntington Mall.

"Les Troyens" ("The Trojans"), by Berlioz, will be shown from 6:30 p.m. to midnight Jan. 23, also at Cinemark.

New at Carnegie Hall

LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- The galleries at Carnegie Hall will showcase a new collection from regional artists. "Reflections: Homage to Dunkard Creek" will be on exhibit through March 8 in the Museum Galleries.

Images created by 90 artists represent many of the species that perished when pollution and low water levels set off an algae bloom in the creek.

A photographic exhibit created with current cellphone technology, "Phoneography: Beyond the Talk," will hang in the Auditorium Gallery. The Old Stone Room will present textiles created by members of the Fiber Arts Network as well as pieces from private collections.

A free opening reception for all three exhibits will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 18 in the Old Stone Room. Many of the works are for sale. The purchase of artwork benefits the artist and Carnegie Hall.
