Canaan tube park opens
DAVIS, W.Va. -- The grand opening of the Canaan Valley Tube Park took place Jan. 11.
The tube park has up to 16 lanes on a 1,200-foot-long slope, and a 1,000-square-foot warming station with restrooms, a fireplace, lounges, viewing area and an outside plaza with a fire ring.
Magic Carpet conveyors at the tube park and at the beginners ski slope make getting back to the top of the hill an easy ride.
Additional infrastructure work, snow-making equipment and structural work are part of the overall ski area improvement project.
Downhill skiers and snowboarders of all levels will find 42 slopes at Canaan, which has a maximum vertical drop of 850 feet. Airboarding (riding on an inflatable sled) is available on specified trails.
Canaan has an ice skating rink that is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday with extended hours on weekends. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing features a 30 km groomed trail and is open from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Equipment rentals for all activities are available.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides accommodating five to eight passengers are also new to Canaan Valley Resort in 2013. Operated by Mountain Trail Rides, the sleigh runs are contingent upon weather.
The tube park and the downhill ski area are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Hours for the Presidents Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend holidays are extended.
