Tour of Kaufman Exhibit
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A guided tour of the exhibit "Curator's Choice: Barrie Kaufman" will be given at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Huntington Museum of Art.
Working primarily on paper, and in a series format, Kaufman explores her themes in a multitude of media. She has been involved with the HMOA for more than 30 years, participating in numerous "Exhibition 280" exhibits, and receiving awards in 1990 and 2003.
Kaufman has a master's in art therapy from Wright State University, and a master's in art from Marshall University. She has been in private practice as an art therapist since 1986 and has a teaching studio in Charleston.
Kaufman has had solo exhibitions of her work in the United States, Canada and Stockholm, Sweden, at Sotheby's, and her work has been in group exhibitions in Taiwan, Canada and throughout the United States.
Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Free Tuesdays at the Huntington Museum are sponsored by AT&T.
The Kaufman exhibit continues on view through Feb. 3.

10-minute plays
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- Greenbrier Valley Theatre is presenting six new 10-minute plays at the New Voices Play Festival, which continues Jan. 25 and 26.
The six plays were selected from more than 100 works submitted from across the country. Three are by West Virginia playwrights.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 60 and older, and $8 for students and children. For tickets or more information, call 304-645-3838.
'Doubt' auditions
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Treehouse Arts Ensemble is holding open auditions for a production of John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt" at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 and 23 at Tamarack.
The performance dates are March 8 and 9 at Tamarack and March 15-17, 21-24 and 28-30 at the Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre. The auditions will consist of a cold read from the script.
Treehouse Arts will compensate actors with a stipend for a commitment of 25 rehearsals and 12 performances. The company will cast one man and three women. The characters are: Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the rigid, conservative, cynical head nun and principal of St. Nicholas School; Father Brendan Flynn, an articulate and personable, middle-aged priest; Sister James, a young nun and an enthusiastic but inexperienced teacher; and Mrs. Muller, the mother of the first black student at St. Nicholas School.
The play about suspected sexual abuse by the priest won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for drama and the 2005 Tony Award for best play.

New art gallery
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Appalachian Art Gallery opened its stained glass and picture framing studio this past week inside Amanda's Glass Art Studio, 3814 1/2 MacCorkle Ave. SE, Kanawha City.
Owners Sherri and Jamie Rhodes have more than 18 years' experience in framing and in stained glass.
As part of their grand opening celebration, the art gallery will offer a 50 percent discount on custom framing orders through Jan. 31.
Framing options include conservation and preservation framing, portraits and canvas, diplomas and certificates, shadow boxes and mirrors. The business also offers a variety of stained glass art, repair service, retail and wholesale gifts. Stained-glass workshops will be offered in the future.

Symphony open house
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An open house hosted by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Charleston Area Alliance will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Clay Center.
There is no admission charge, but reservations are required. The annual event is an opportunity to learn about the symphony and the Alliance and to network with local business leaders.

High-def opera
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. -- An encore presentation of a Metropolitan Opera performance of "Les Troyens (The Trojans)" by Hector Berlioz will be shown from 6:30 p.m. to midnight Wednesday at Cinemark in the Huntington Mall at Barboursville.

Art Store this week
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Local artist Susan Petryszak and Massachusetts artist Selina Trieff have works for sale at the Art Store, in the Bridge Road Shops.
Petryszak is a painter who studied both art and biology at Marshall University. Her work studies the impression of natural elements, which she captures in pigments suspended in acrylic media.
Trieff studied in New York at the Art Students League and Brooklyn College and in Massachusetts at the Hans Hofmann School. Her work is based in portraiture of figures and animals, which focus on composition, form, shape and color with theatrical elements.
