W.Va. sesquicentennial
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The State Museum will commemorate West Virginia's 150th birthday with a special sesquicentennial exhibit that opens with a reception at 6 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Culture Center.
"West Virginia 150" focuses on 150 people, places and events that helped to shape life in West Virginia during the past 150 years. It also features West Virginia's national and international accomplishments and achievements since West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863.
The exhibit's artifacts cover the state's steel, coal, glass, timber and railroad industries as well as notable West Virginians and institutions.
"West Virginia has such a rich and interesting history that it was really difficult to narrow the exhibit down to 150 items," says museum director Charles Morris.
Visitors to the exhibit may add their own suggestions. A special online exhibit featuring these recommendations will open later this year. The public also is encouraged to donate items to commemorate the state's birthday.
The State Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.
FestivALL applications
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Applications are being accepted for the 2013 FestivALL Capitol Street Art Fair, which will take place June 29 and 30. The juried fair is dedicated to fine arts and fine crafts.

Wildlife art wanted
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is requesting original wildlife art for its 2014 wildlife calendar. There is a Feb. 18 deadline to submit artwork for the calendar.
An electronic image of each entry capable of being sized at 14 1/2 inches wide by 11 1/2 inches high at 300 dpi is preferred, but a lower-resolution image or 35 mm color slide will be accepted. Artists may submit multiple entries.
Paintings may depict popular game and fish species or feature the state's lesser-known animals such as snakes, frogs, turtles, salamanders, bats, songbirds, small mammals and nongame fish. Paintings not chosen in previous years may be resubmitted.
A $100 prize is awarded for each painting chosen, with $500 going to the artist whose artwork is picked for the cover. Paintings are chosen based on overall composition and quality, along with anatomical and contextual accuracy. The quality of the electronic image or submitted slide is very important for judging the artwork.

About $500,000 is expected to be available for the grant awards.

Eligible projects include the restoration, rehabilitation or archaeological development of historic sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Properties owned by church organizations or used exclusively for religious purposes are not eligible for funding. Governmental properties that are not accessible to the public also are not eligible for funding. All applications must show evidence of public support and public benefit.

History calendar
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The State Historic Preservation Office has published "Land, People and Statehood," a 13-month calendar highlighting West Virginia's pathway to statehood. The calendars are free while supplies last.
Each month, the calendar focuses upon a different historic character, parcel of land or Civil War site in West Virginia. The topics include battle sites and historic mansions and buildings, such as Independence Hall in Wheeling and Tyree Tavern in Fayette County.
The calendar also has information on the Certified Local Government Program, Section 106 review process, historic rehabilitation tax credits, the National Register of Historic Places and grants available.

Art Store artists
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Art Store has works this week by local artists Diane White, DutchHammer and the late June Kilgore.
White is a Marshall University graduate who focuses on mixed-media painting, which involves manipulation of color and line.
Chris Dutch and Robin Hammer make up the artistic duo DutchHammer. Together, they manipulate wood, glass and metal to create colorful sculptures.
The Art Store is also featuring a large-scale work by the late June Kilgore, a popular abstract expressionist artist in West Virginia. Kilgore taught for many years at Marshall University and served as chairwoman of the art and design department.

Collages in national show
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two area artists, Dick Allowatt and Mark Tobin Moore, have their artwork included in a national show.
The National Collage Society Signature Member Show is on exhibit from Jan. 25 to March 17 at the Mesa Art Center in Phoenix.
Allowatt, who won one of five merit awards given, lives in St. Albans and is art director for the Arnold Agency. Moore, of Charleston, is an art professor at Concord University-Beckley.
