Caregiver workshops

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The PalliativeCare Center, a division of HospiceCare, will conduct a free, two-hour workshop for those who care for someone with a serious illness.

Attendees will receive tips on how to make caregiving easier and safer, and information on planning ahead and on specific resources in their community that can help.

Workshops are scheduled at the following locations:

Food bank benefit

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- FireSide Grille will host a "Dine Out for Hunger" event at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 to benefit the Huntington Area Food Bank. The Huntington Area Food Bank provides food to children, senior and families in need in Putnam County as well as nearly 100,000 people in 16 other counties in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.

The Bob Thompson Unit will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. FireSide Grille is off the Teays Valley/Winfield exit off Interstate 64. For more information about the food bank, visit www.hafb.org or Facebook.

Bootlegger's Ball

LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- Carnegie Hall is throwing itself a fundraiser -- Bootlegger's Ball II -- from 8 p.m. to midnight Feb. 23.

Carnegie Hall, 105 Church St., will become a 1920s speakeasy, featuring musicians, dancers, comedians, magicians, acrobats, jugglers, minstrels and other diversions.

Period clothing is encouraged but not required. Admission is $60 in advance, $70 at the door.

Children's clinic gala

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An Oscars gala Feb. 24 will benefit the Children's Therapy Clinic in Charleston.

The fundraiser starts at 6:30 p.m. at Charleston Embassy Suites and features a Hollywood atmosphere complete with a red-carpet entrance and paparazzi, hors d'oeurves, legal beverages and desserts, a celebrity costume contest, an Oscars trivia game and a big-screen broadcast of the Academy Awards show.

Tickets are $75 in advance or $100 at the door. For tickets, call clinic director Valicia Leary at 304-342-9515.

The annual Shining Star Award will be shared this year by Lia DiTrapano Fairless and her mother, Martha DiTrapano, for their volunteerism and philanthropy toward the clinic. The women helped initiate the Jules Burt High Heel Hike for Autism as a major fundraiser for the clinic.
