Library basket auction
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Dozens of baskets will be up for auction, including baskets with a sternwheeler cruise, a ghost tour and a stay at Mardi Gras Casino and Resort, at the annual fundraiser "A Tisket, A Tasket ... A Literary Basket" on April 20.
Tickets are on sale now for the Friends of the Library Foundation of Kanawha County event, which begins at 6 p.m. at NiSource Gas Transmission. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on dozens of baskets with literary themes.
The Friends are collecting baskets, items to be included in baskets or cash donations for the auction, which raised more than $31,000 for the library last year.
Ticket are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Additional tickets of $50 and $100 are available for those who want to provide more support for the library. Buy tickets at www.kanawhalibrary.org, or contact Lois Payne at 304-343-4646, ext. 283.
With money from last year, the foundation provided support for the summer reading program, sponsored children's authors at the West Virginia Book Festival and purchased Summer Library Club shirts for nearly 2,000 children who completed the reading program.

Irish program and benefit
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "When Irish Eyes Are Shining," an evening of song, recitations and jokes, will begin at 7 p.m. March 16 at LaBelle Theater, 311 D St., South Charleston. Tickets are $5 with proceeds going to the South Charleston Museum.
Performers for the two-act program include Buddy Griffin, The Earl of Elkview and the O'Daugherty Family Singers.
Manna Meal spring concert
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Bare Bones and the Martin Luther King Jr. Male Chorus will perform at Manna Meal's annual spring concert at 7 p.m. March 23 at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, 1009 Virginia St. E.
"Evening of Song" is a fundraiser for Manna Meal, Charleston's oldest and largest soup kitchen. The concert is free, but donations will be taken to feed the city's homeless and hungry.
Bare Bones, a trio featuring Becky and Bill Kimmons and Mark Davis, will perform an array of musical styles, including a cappella, gospel and folk.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Male Chorus, directed by Leroy Robinson, is composed of ministers and lay leaders from area church denominations.
A reception will take place following the concert in the church hall.

1,001 boxes
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- In response to Manna Meal's recent appeal for cereal, 1,001 boxes were donated for the soup kitchen to serve for breakfast.
Executive Director Jean Simpson said, "We use 60 boxes of cereal per week, so this should hold us until mid-June. This includes serving oatmeal or grits a couple mornings a week on those mornings we do not serve cereal. The people who have breakfast with us may have as many bowls as they want of the cereal but are limited to one serving on other items. The average amount of people we serve breakfast to is 110 per day. We serve seven days a week for breakfast and lunch."
