School gala benefit
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Mountaineer Montessori School will present its inaugural "Luminaria Gala: Lighting the Way for Education," beginning with a reception at 5:15 p.m. March 28 at the Clay Center. Described as an "all-ages party and Montessori reunion," the event is open to all children and families, not just MMS students.
Children can experience the Mylan Exploratorium and enjoy a special kids' menu. Area band Qiet will perform, and adults can enjoy heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and an extensive silent auction of luxury items and vacation packages. Proceeds from the event will support MMS programs as well as the Education for Innovation fund, which provides tuition aid to qualified families.
Students from MMS will perform original music that showcases the honorees' contributions to West Virginia. Honorees in 2013 are the Clay Center for the Vision and Legacy of John McClaugherty; Joe Rice, a 23-year MMS educator; and Austin Susman, a George Washington High School student and MMS alumnus, the co-creator of an award-winning anti-bullying video game.
A "Stellar Finale" will feature a dessert bar and all-ages dancing with music provided by a DJ.

Raffle winner
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Mary Jarvis Currence was the grand-prize winner of $10,000 in the 28th annual McClaugherty Raffle held earlier this month as a benefit for the Clay Center and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
This year's raffle netted $46,000, which will be divided evenly between the organizations.
Currence purchased her ticket from top ticket seller Sallie McClaugherty.
Among the other winners were Janice Lessley, $2,000; Dwight Foley, $1,000; Dennis Cavender, Stephen Kopp and Jan Johnson, $500; Kim Brown, weekend at Snowshoe; and Chris Deweese, an overnight stay at Café Cimino.
Employees of Arnett Foster Toothman PLLC donated their time for raffle administration. At the drawing party, local guitarist Ryan Kennedy provided live music, and hors d'oeuvres were prepared by Charleston Embassy Suites.
Nearly 100 volunteers, led by raffle chairwomen and Friends of Clay Center board members Sarah Brown and Gabriele Wohl, helped organize the event and sell nearly 700 tickets.
