West Virginia 150
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia 150, a special sesquicentennial exhibit commemorating West Virginia's 150th birthday, will be on display until Dec. 31 at the West Virginia State Museum in the Culture Center.
The exhibit focuses on more than 150 people, places and events that helped to shape the lives of West Virginians over the past 150 years. The exhibit features West Virginia's national and international accomplishments and achievements since the state's birth on June 20, 1863.
Admission is free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The State Museum, also free, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Civil War re-enactment
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Two engagements of the Civil War will be re-enacted Thursday through Sunday in Hurricane: The Battle of Scary Creek and the Blue and Gray Skirmish at Hurricane Bridge.
Activities and attractions include campsite tours; a historic remembrance play; artillery night firing; rides in a horse-drawn wagon; portrayals of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. RIPLEY, W.Va. -- The annual West Virginia Chocolate Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 23 in Ripley.

Cottontail Express
ELKINS, W.Va. -- On March 30, children dressed in their Easter best can meet Peter Cottontail on the Cottontail Express train ride on the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad.
The 1 1/2-hour round-trip down the rails will include face painting, singing and a search for that hippity-hoppity bunny.
Departure times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Ticket prices (train ride only) are $35 for adults and children age 12 and older, $30 for children ages 4-11 and free for children younger than 4. Miniatures show, saleMORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Mountaineer Miniatures of Fairmont, the only dollhouse club in West Virginia, will hold its annual show and sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13 at the Ramada Inn near Morgantown.
A furnished three-story dollhouse will be raffled off with all proceeds to go to Make-A-Wish Foundation. There will be vendor tables with everything a well-furnished dollhouse would need. Admission is $1 for adults, free for children under 12. Raffle tickets are $1 or 6 for $5.
The cost of war
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- "Life and Limb: The Toll of The American Civil War," is on display through March 23 in the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Library.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the exhibition explores the experiences of disabled veterans. Hundreds of thousands were permanently disabled by battlefield injuries or surgery, which saved lives by sacrificing limbs.

Civil War heritage
PETERSBURG, W.Va. -- "Our Civil War Heritage: Escape to the Mountains 2013" remains on exhibit through April 30 at Landes Arts Center in Petersburg.
The large historical display includes newspapers, documents, telegrams and letters of famous Civil War events, including Gen. Robert E. Lee's handwritten surrender and a general order to his troops to surrender. A history of mapping, of balloons in the war, the role railroads played in the struggle, photographs and much more are covered in the exhibition.

Liberty on the border
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- "Liberty on the Border," a Civil War exhibition, is on display now through Aug. 25 at the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia in Beckley.
"Liberty on the Border" focuses on the relationships among the states along the Ohio River and on the nonmilitary events and civilian contributions that put the causes, effects and meaning of the war in more personal terms. Visitors will learn the surprising roles women and children played in the war.
The exhibit includes more than 300 artifacts, archival documents, lithographs and photographs. It also contains a multitude of interactive elements and computer interactivities. There are historic military artifacts, including some on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and other museums.
