Pepperoni roll contest
Taste-of-All Charleston is compiling a recipe eBook of the official state food, the pepperoni roll, in honor of West Virginia's 150th birthday. Submissions will be accepted from the public or from restaurants around the state until noon Monday.
Pepperoni roll recipes may include additional fillings, toppings and other ingredients. The recipe book will combine some of the favorites and most unusual spins from across the state.
Recipes must include ingredient lists and full instructions. Public recipe submissions must include a first and last name and hometown, and can also include a photo and short paragraph about why pepperoni rolls are important to the state or to the recipe owner.
Restaurants also will be allowed to include basic information about their eatery along with their recipe, including a logo, short description, contact information and hours.
The eBook will be available for download on the FestivALL Charleston website (http://www.festivallcharleston.com) and other West Virginia sites. Taste-of-All, presented by Mardi Gras Casino & Resort, is the culinary main event of FestivALL, Charleston's 10-day arts and culture festival.
This year's Taste-of-ALL Charleston will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 at the Charleston Civic Center.

When Gazette features writer/video producer and margarita aficionado Douglas Imbrogno recently returned from a trip to New York City, he raved about the cucumber, jalapeno and lime margarita he enjoyed at Toloache Mexican bistro.
His co-workers were a little skeptical at the combination, but some research turned up recipes that received high marks from people who made them.
"This is such a fabulous cocktail.... This is going to be one of my go-to drinks," enthused one reviewer. Imbrogno scrutinized the recipe and proclaimed it close to the one he enjoyed, minus the orange liqueur.
So, without further ado, we bring you an alternative to the classic lime and tequila margarita just in time for Cinco De Mayo celebrations Sunday.
Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 cup white tequila
1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier
1/4 cup simple syrup, or more as needed*
4 thin slices cucumber
1 jalapeno, halved lengthwise
Ice, for serving
Salt for glass rims, optional
MIX together the lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, simple syrup, cucumber and jalapeno in a large pitcher. Chill for at least 1 hour. The longer the margarita sits, the more the cucumber and jalapeno flavors infuse into the drink.
SERVE over ice in salt-rimmed glasses, if desired
* Simple syrup may be purchased or made, using equal parts water and sugar. Boil water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Cool.
Food Pantry needs
Covenant House Food Pantry and Manna Meal are in need of macaroni and cheese, spaghetti sauce and noodles, cornbread mix, eggs, cooking oil, canned tuna, canned beans, pancake mix and syrup, and toilet paper.
The Drop-In-Center at Covenant House is out of many items, including shampoo (full and travel size), deodorant, body soap, diapers (all sizes), razors, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
It also needs socks, underwear, sewing kits (travel size), Rubik's Cubes, Legos, knitting needles and yarn, crochet hooks and yarn, sewing thread, needles and fabric.
Drop off items at Manna Meal, 1105 Quarrier St., from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. any day, or at the Food Pantry, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, or at the Covenant House, 600 Shrewsbury St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
