Irish road bowling
DAVIS, W.Va. -- A two-day road bowling event will take place June 15 and 16 at Blackwater Falls State Park and Canaan Valley Resort State Park. Bowling begins at 1:30 p.m. on both days.
Irish road bowling is an old Irish sport that was played by troops in West Virginia during the American Civil War. To play, a 28-ounce iron and steel cannonball, the size of a tennis ball, is hurled down a country lane. The player or team taking the fewest rolls to get to the finish line wins.

Beverly statehood program
BEVERLY, W.Va. -- The Beverly Heritage Center will hold daylong activities and a statehood commemoration program, beginning at 1 p.m. June 15.
Author and historical interpreter Hunter Lesser will present "Lincoln's Odd Trick: Heroes, Rascals & Rogues of West Virginia Statehood," a multimedia presentation that will focus on the colorful personalities of the statehood saga.
Actors portraying Francis Pierpont, governor of the Restored Government of Virginia, and Sen. John Carlile will discuss with each other and the audience some of the issues and controversies of statehood.
Following the program, a reception will feature a West Virginia birthday cake. Reception music will be provided by the Rich Mountain String Band performing Civil War and minstrel tunes.
The Beverly Heritage Center is a museum, visitor center and gift shop at the intersection of U.S. 219 and Files Creek Road in Beverly, six miles south of Elkins.
