Walker will receive the Appalachian Heritage Writers Award from the West Virginia Humanities Council and Shepherd University on Sept. 26. He'll serve as the 2013 Appalachian Heritage Writer-in-Residence at Shepherd University; the theme of his residency is "Voices from Affrilachia."
Walker's work will form the centerpiece of the sixth volume of the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, along with other writers from the region and across the country. He will serve as editorial adviser to the anthology project, and he will select the winners of the 2013 West Virginia Fiction Competition, announced in September.
The anthology is funded by the West Virginia Center for the Book and the Shepherd University Foundation. TERRA ALTA, W.Va. -- The Mom's Choice Awards has given a Silver designation to "Chloe, The Very Special Goat" by Rosanne Harper Glover, of Petersburg.
Published by Headline Books Inc. of Terra Alta, the children's book is a true story about a goat who moves into the house after she's cast aside as a runt on a snowy day.
The Mom's Choice Awards is a program that recognizes authors and others for their efforts in creating quality family-friendly media, products and services.
"Chloe, The Very Special Goat" costs $16.95 and is available from local and online bookstores.
RAINELLE, W.Va. -- The Rainelle Community Development Corp. is looking for old photographs and stories for a pictorial history book of the Greenbrier County town.
The 128-page paperback book will be published by Arcadia Publishing, which has produced 86 books about West Virginia communities.
Corporation Executive Director Andrea Pendleton said, "We especially want photographs that illustrate the Town's slogan, 'Built to Carry On.'"
The book will include photographs telling the stories of schools, churches, businesses, medicine, recreation, government, timber, coal and railroads.
