CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Mountaineer Montessori School and the University of Charleston are throwing a party for the Charleston community from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 29 on the UC lawn.
Sunday Funday is a free family event that will feature interactive educational exhibits from the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, Charleston Fire Department, Kanawha County Sheriff's Department and other civic groups.
Young children can take part in a variety of carnival games, pirate and princess makeovers, a treasure dig, face painting, snow cones and other activities. For a $10 wristband, children may bounce all day in the inflatable zone.
The school's advanced students are designing one-of-a-kind collection jars to accept money for Manna Meal.
Entertainment will be provided violist Bernard DiGregorio, magician John Slicer and dancers from the River City Youth Ballet Ensemble. More than 20 art and craft vendors will showcase their items.

Housing hall of fame
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The deadline to submit nominations for the 2014 West Virginia Affordable Housing Hall of Fame is Sept. 30.
The hall of fame was created to recognize those who have made significant and lasting contributions to housing in West Virginia.
Nomination submissions should include information as listed on the West Virginia Affordable Housing Hall of Fame Nomination Form (available at www.habitatwv.org/WVAHHOF/). Nominees may be individuals, groups or agencies.

Snazzy Rags sale
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Thrift shoppers can snag deals and contribute to good causes at the Snazzy Rags charity consignment event 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at the India Center, Green Road, off U.S. 119, South Charleston.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to CAMC Cancer Center wig shop and Union Mission.
Shoppers who "like" the Snazzy Rage page on Facebook may attend a preview sale from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26. On Sept. 28, certain items will be discounted.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Christ Church United Methodist will hold its annual two-day extravaganza sale Oct. 3 and 4 at the church, at Quarrier and Morris streets. Proceeds support local missions.
Items for sale include furniture, clothing, antiques, sporting goods, books, toys, holiday decorations and jewelry. Homemade baked goods and other food products will be available to buy.

Coupons for donations
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Shoppers at Elder-Beerman in the Kanawha Mall will receive coupons for up to 25 percent off in exchange for clothing and home textile donations to Goodwill.
The donations are sold at Goodwill Industries retail stores, where the revenue generated supports job training programs and community services for people facing challenges to finding employment.
Donations will be accepted through Oct. 5.
Lung Association luncheon
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The American Lung Association in West Virginia is holding its inaugural Take a Breath for Women Luncheon Nov. 12 at the Charleston Marriott Town Center.
The event will focus on in the increase of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in women, risk factors, treatments, symptoms, smoking cessation options, along with providing life-saving and life-changing information to share with others.
The association notes that lung cancer is the No. 1 killer of women with a 116 percent increase in the past 35 years. More than two-thirds of lung cancer diagnoses are of former smokers or people who have never smoked.
Keynote speaker will be Aila Accad, a nurse, author and certified well-being author. Accad specializes in quick ways to release stress and reclaim energy to live a full life.
Luncheon tickets cost $65. Companies are encouraged to sponsor tables of 10. All funds raised will be used to fight asthma, COPD, emphysema and lung cancer through education, community service, advocacy and research.
