WEBSTER SRPINGS -- The Burgoo Cook-off will take place Oct. 12 in Webster Springs at the Baker's Island Recreation Area in City Park.
Entrants in the Burgoo contest must have their entries at the site by 11 a.m.; judging will begin at noon. Cash prizes of $500, $200 and $100 will be awarded. An apple pie contest will also take place with cash prizes of $75, $50 and $25
Activities begin at 10 a.m. with live bluegrass music, hayrides, pumpkin painting, cake walks, apple butter making, youth fishing and arts and crafts, plus much more.
Webster Memorial Hospital will hold a health fair at the event, with several free health screenings.

Rocket Boys Fest
BECKLEY -- October Sky Rocket Boys Festival starts Thursday and lasts until Sunday in various venues in Beckley and New River Park.
Festival goers will have the opportunity to meet four of the Rocket Boys, and to watch a rocket launch from New River Park's Launch Pad in Beckley.
In addition, there'll be music by area performers, craft and food vendors, contests in tattoo design, song writing contest, paper airplane flight, essay and fire hydrant painting contest. Motor coach tours of Coalwood, a former coal mining community, will be offered and the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine will be open to festival visitors who want to travel underground to get a firsthand look at how coal was mined.

Fall festival in Point Pleasant
POINT PLEASANT -- A Country Fall Festival will take place Oct. 5 and 6 at the West Virginia State Farm Museum, 1458 Fairground Road, Point Pleasant.
The family-oriented event will feature a gas and steam engine show, working sawmill, quilt show, the antique bottle show, and the Gravely Swap Meet. There will be demonstrations of making sorghum, apple butter and apple cider, also for sale.
Visitors may tour the more than 30 buildings on the grounds and see displays of vintage tractors and a military exhibit. An antique tractor pull is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, and a gospel sing at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 6. The Museum Country Store and Country Kitchen will be open.
