"And that's a bad thing because ...?" he said.

"It took forever to get grass growing in all that shade," I said.

"Maybe what it needs to grow even better next year is a heavy blanket of leaves to keep it warm through the winter," said Geoff.

He could see I wasn't convinced.

"You know, people die every year raking leaves," he said.

"I think you mean shoveling snow," I said.

He shook his head.

"A man in Asheboro, N.C., found a grenade while raking his lawn," said Geoff. "Same thing happened to a man in Miami. How do you know there aren't a few grenades out there on our lawn?"

I had to admit, the man had a point. Deep as those leaves were, a booby-trapped Hummer could be parked on our lawn and we wouldn't suspect.

"You'd have made a good salesman," I said. "Or politician."

I noticed him shiver, so I asked what was wrong.

"Scary thought," he said. "What if there are leftover politicians buried under those leaves?"

"We'll know if there were come next summer," I said. "All that fertilizer should make our yard extra green."
