  •   Byrd previously cast 4,705 votes in a row -- the second-highest total in Senate history.
  •

  •   Byrd has served on a Senate Committee longer than anyone, becoming a member of the powerful U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee on Jan. 14, 1959, just after becoming a senator. Byrd served as the committee's chair or ranking minority member since 1989.
  •

On January 6, Byrd stepped down as chair. But he still sits on the committee that makes key decisions about federal spending.

  •   Byrd has held more leadership positions than anyone else, including Senate majority leader, majority whip, minority leader and president pro tempore.
  •

    Byrd's unusual accomplishments also include:

  •   Presiding over the Senate's shortest session, lasting six-tenths of one second on Feb. 27, 1989, and its longest continuous session, lasting 21 hours and eight minutes on March 7 and 8, 1960.
  •

  •   In 1970, Byrd became the first candidate to win all of West Virginia's 55 counties in an contested election, in which he got 78 percent of the vote.
  •

  •   Byrd is the only person to earn a law degree while in Congress. President John F. Kennedy personally handed Byrd his degree during 1963 graduation ceremonies at American University.
  •

"The Almanac of American Politics," a widely consulted directory about federal politics, calls Byrd the politician who "may come closer to the kind of senator the Founding Fathers had in mind than any other."

Wednesday's celebration will begin at 3 p.m. in front of Byrd's statue on the second floor of the state Capitol under the rotunda.

In addition to Manchin and Rose, speakers will include: U.S. Circuit Court Judge M. Blane Michael; Anne Barth, who runs Byrd's offices in Charleston; and Ray Smock, director of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies at Shepherd University.

Following the ceremony, visitors can look at an exhibit featuring Byrd's accomplishments, including photographs and personal memorabilia, including one of his fiddles.

The ceremony and exhibit are free and open to the public.

"I'm West Virginia's billion dollar industry. You can call me Big Daddy". What a shame that someone elected to the U.S. Senate would have such a mind set and wish to have his name emblazioned on every school, highway, senior center, research center and maybe outhouses too. A career politician handing out taxpayer money as if it were his. He and his ilk (other career politicians) are a blight on America. And all this from a man who secured his education at taxpayers expense, sponsored and supported an automatic annual congressional pay raise which must be voted down by congressional members and a man who has not even lived in the state for 50 years and probably doesn't even know what day of the week or month it is and has his staff managing his office. And I thought Obama had a massive ego to feed!

What irony we have here. No disrespect to Robert Byrd the man, but these "achievements" would have our Founding Fathers turning somersaults in their graves. Our elected representatives were to be common folks who lived in their communities and experienced life as a normal citizen first and only to serve in Congress for a temporary period to make important decisions for the Nation. Now we have professional politicians who more often than not acquire vast sums of money beyond their salaries as they live a grand lifestyle completely foreign to you, me and our neighbors. And for this, unless you are part of the club (republican or democrat) with mighty benefactors, you have no chance to mount a campaign to unseat them. Such a shame we have brought upon ourselves and our Nation. Yet we continue to elect them as they provide us tokens of their largess...at our expense (literally). Yet for all these grand Representatives for all these years, why is our State so stagnate?

Sen. Robert C. Byrd and staff, thank you for your tireless years of dedication to the great state of WV. Thank you for bringing federal dollars to this state, without it our bridges, schools, roads, and veterans hospitals would not have been repaired/or built. As a US senator you have showed up to vote in the passing of many congressional bills, that assist in helping the poor and working families. In my heart I believe that you have apologized for YOUR ATROCIOUS PAST and have tried to right a wrong to our country. May God bless your soul!

Byrd has been a great inspiration to the state of West Virginia. He has inspired all who would allow themselves to depend on the government to provide a living for them. He is a legend in political circles on how to get the greatest use out of the theory of welfare. All of the time he has been in political power, he has produced one gift to the state that generates payrolls. When the fed budget could least afford it, he got a piece of the FBI transferred to WV. There may also be a couple prisons. He could have assisted Jennings Randolph to broaden the use of coal. Randolph suggested they do so, but that was when Byrd was extending his power by supporting Democrat agenda. He did succeed as a proponent of Democrat power to the detriment of the state.

The heck of it is, he waited until the country could not afford the pork before he became a/the major provider of consumable pork (monthly welfare check).
