'Holiday in Pink'

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Attendees are invited to be pampered at "Holiday in Pink" from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn and Suites Charleston West in South Charleston.

Sponsored by the hotel, the South Charleston Rotary Club, Wellness Council of West Virginia and Susan G. Komen for the Cure West Virginia, the free event is geared toward breast cancer awareness and other health issues.

Spa activities, giveaways, entertainment and a health fair will be featured. The movie "Pretty in Pink" will be played and the hotel will provide food and beverages to all attendees.

The Komen group will use the event for team packet pickup and preregistering teams for the Race for the Cure, which takes place May 5.

HospiceCare yard sale

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- HospiceCare is having its first-ever yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 5 in the parking lot of its main office at 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., near Patrick Street on the West Side.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit Friends of Hospice volunteer program.

Volunteers will be grilling hot dogs and selling snacks and drinks.

HospiceCare is a nonprofit health-care agency that provides hospice and palliative care services and assistance to patients and their families in 16 counties.

Adoption, foster care

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Individuals or families interested in adoption or in becoming foster parents are invited to a foster/adoption information open house from 1 to 3 p.m. May 12 at the Huntington Mall Community Room.

In West Virginia, more than 4,000 children are in foster care, and about 1,000 of those children are legally eligible for adoption. The open house will provide information that outlines the process for adoption and foster care certification, and social workers will be available for one-on-one discussion. Refreshments will be provided.

Adoptive and foster parents for school-age children are urgently needed. Call 866-CALL-MWV for details or to receive a foster/adopt information packet. Attendees do not have to make any commitments by attending.

Free health fair

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Mount Calvary Baptist Church will host a health and safety fair from 8 a.m. to noon April 28 at the church, 1509 Bigley Ave.

The fair is free and open to the public and will include as exhibitors Thomas Memorial Hospital (various lab tests available), Saint Francis Hospital (various lab tests available, $10), Charleston Fire Department with its fire safety house, Charleston Police Department Bicycle Patrol for bike and helmet safety inspections, West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program, West Virginia Division of Tobacco Prevention, Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, blood glucose monitoring companies and Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.
