Men's shelter needs items
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The following items are needed for the men's shelter Crossroads: towels, washcloths, shampoo, liquid body wash, disposable razors and foot powder.
Items can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. any day at the shelter, 503 Leon Sullivan Way.
Concord scholarship dinner
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Concord University Foundation will hold its annual dinner to raise money for scholarships for Concord students at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Clay Center.
The keynote speaker will be Jack Furst, philanthropist, businessman and lifelong Boy Scouts of America volunteer.
A member of the BSA's national executive board and an officer of the national council, Furst serves as team leader for developing and programming the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The high-adventure base in the New River Gorge area will host the 2013 Boy Scout National Jamboree.
Furst's business interests include ranching and private investments. He lives with his family at their ranch in Argyle, Texas. He is an adjunct professor of finance at the University of North Texas.

Tickets for the Charleston dinner are $125 per person. Current members of the Concord University Alumni Association may attend the dinner for $100. Along with individual seating, tables and sponsorships of the event are also available.

Animal rescue benefit feast
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- An all-you-can-eat Italian feast to raise money for New Hope Animal Rescue will take place Sept. 8 at The Greenhouse of Teays Valley, in Hurricane.
There will be two seatings -- 5 to 6 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Both times accommodate 70 people.
The menu includes three pasta entrees, vegetables, salad and beverage. There will be a cash bar for beer and wine. The price of the dinner is $15. Tickets may be purchased at the Paws and Shop Thrift Store or at the Greenhouse.
Proceeds will help the New Hope with its animal rescue and other programs. For more information, call 304-562-0300.
