CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha Garden Club was recently honored for its ongoing efforts to revitalize Charleston's Davis Park.
The Garden Club of America Zone VII presented the award for the Zone Civic Improvement Award to Ann Orders, president of Kanawha Garden Club, at the Oct. 3 awards banquet in the clubhouse at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky.
Since 2011, the Kanawha Garden Club has partnered with the city of Charleston and urban planner Tim Forren to design and execute a major revitalization of Davis Park. Located between Washington and Lee streets on the west side of Capitol Street, Davis Park had become overgrown and in need of a facelift.
Tree trimming and removal of dense shrubbery have added light to the park and new flowerbeds and plantings have added color and interest. The borders of the park have been lowered to remove visual barriers, and the park benches have been refurnished. Finishing touches this fall and in spring 2014 will include painting the gazebo and the addition of a native perennials bed.
Briar Hills Garden Club and many local citizens, businesses and foundations have supported the project.
