Into the Garden: A short list of bad ideas

  • Gardens that don't fit their place in the world. Grand design is great for a grand space. But if you live in the 'burbs, don't landscape like you live in the Hamptons. Again, I love a lush, full garden. But remember this one word: scale.
  • There are many more things that drive me crazy, but I don't want to waste all of my built-up goodwill on just one column. Let me know what you don't like. Don't be shy.

    Garden events

    The Kanawha County Master Gardener newsletter lists three upcoming events for garden enthusiasts.

    "Fall Flora in the Forest," Clay Center Lecture, 12:15 p.m. Sept. 8 with Master Naturalist Betsy Trammell.

    "Margaret Denison Fall Nature Walk," 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 11, Kanawha State Forest. Specific hikes include: fall wildflowers, fungi, pond/aquatic life, birds, trees and nature photography. Registration: 9-9:30 a.m. at the pool area. Fee: $5. Call Shirley Schweizer, 304-925-2771.

    "Wheeling Gardening Symposium," 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Sept. 18, Shrader Environmental Center at Oglebay Park. Sessions include: lilacs; designing a perennial garden; the daisy family; fall landscaping, extending garden season; growing wild with native plants. Fee: $35. Register by Sept. 11.
