Herb festival

The West Virginia Herb Association will present the Fall Herb Festival Oct. 9 at Jackson's Mill. This year's theme is "The Versatility of Herbs," and there will be workshops, make-it-take-it's, music and herb-and-mushroom walks. A photo contest will be held, with winners appearing in the 2011 calendar.

The 2011 membership and a 2011 West Virginia Herb Association calendar are included in the $30 registration fee.

Another garden 'faux pas'

My friend Kim reminded me of one of the garden no-no's that both of us agree should be added to my list of garden don'ts.

"Don't forget the forsythia balls," she texted.

How could I have left this off the list? In my yard, I will selectively prune my forsythia, going to the base of the branch to thin the bushes, to keep them in check. I believe that if God intended a bush to grow in graceful long, arching branches, I should follow that lead!
