Into the Garden: Trimming isn't just for Christmas trees

Joyce Andrews writes:

"You asked readers to contribute their opinions regarding gardening/landscaping mistakes that people often make. It really bothers me to see homeowners plant trees right in front of the front door of their house. It is like they never even think about how large that little tree or bush will become in just a few short years.

"They end up hiding the most important part of their home -- the front door. This should be the welcoming focus for their home. In addition, hiding your home behind trees and shrubs may also aid and abet someone who wants to break into your home."

Joyce, the safety issue is valid not only to avoid break-ins, but also to keep your home safe from damage during a storm.

More garden gifts

I love the website www.sprouthome.com. They have some unique gifts for gardeners -- including Egglings.

Egglings look and feel like an extra-large egg, but, its promotional material says, "crack its top and discover a garden ready for sowing! Extremely popular in Japan, where it originated, the Eggling is made of white porous ceramic (about 2 inches in height and diameter), and they come with a terra cotta tray and seed pack of either herbs or flowers."

The plants grow for up to five months, and then the Eggling can be planted directly in soil. Seeds include basil, wild strawberry, prickly cactus, lavender and daisies, and the kits are under $10.

There's also a bloom-in-a-bag: self-contained growing in a leak-proof bag. Varieties include sunflowers, cat grass, basil, lavender and strawberry, and they are under $10.

These would be good gifts for the nongardener, as well, as they are pretty black-thumb-proof! A nice bit of greenery for the home in the winter months.
