Putnam market is uprooting

Members of the Putnam Farmers' Market voted overwhelmingly to relocate the market to Hurricane City Park next to the water reservoir on W.Va. 34, a short distance from the previous location in Valley Park.

The market will debut at the new location May 19 at 3:30 p.m. and will be open on Thursdays and Saturdays through June. Thursday hours will be 3:30 to 7 p.m. The market also will be open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. In July, when produce is abundant, the market plans to expand operation to three days a week, including Tuesdays. In September, the market will resume the two-day schedule until Oct. 30.

Market managers Aimee Figgatt and Claude Nelon are optimistic 2011 will be a good year. Nearly 25 vendors have joined the market organization, with a few spaces still available. Vendors are not required to attend every market, but customers can continue to expect a wide variety of affordable products including bedding plants, fresh produce, meats, free-range eggs, honey, herbs, flowers and selected crafts.

The market will hold a relocation celebration, "Fresh Start," on May 19 to show patrons the market is maintaining tradition but with a new atmosphere.
