Cohen's humor wasn't lost on Landscape Association members when she said she was asked to describe her landscape.

"This isn't a garden -- it's a botanical masterpiece!"

The list of favorite plants that Cohen distributed was lengthy, to say the least. A few highlights follow.

One of the best small, spring-blooming trees, according to Cohen, is the Chionanthus virginicus, or fringe tree. She said if the spring temperatures remain cool, the tree will bloom for six weeks.

Of course, one of her favorite spring perennials is the Tiarella 'Stephanie Cohen,' a foamflower that blooms in the shade. She also loves the Brunnera 'Kings Ransom,' a Siberian bugloss that's very tough and deer-resistant. Spring shrubs mentioned include various witchhazels, including 'Purple Ribbons,' new a couple of years ago and great for the winter blahs.

The perennial-loving speaker talked about several sedges, including 'Lemon Zest' and 'Banana Boat.'

For summer, there's Hemerocallis 'Stephanie Returns,' also named for Cohen. She loves the huge 'Komodo Dragon' hosta, as well as the tiny 'Blue Mouse Ears.' Her favorite fern is the Japanese painted fern, and, since she's fond of pink flowers, she loves Stachys officinalis'Pink Cotton Candy.'

Fall recommendations from the gardening expert included Viburnum trilobum (American cranberry bush) and Aronia arbutifolia (red chokeberry). Perennials included Tricyrtis formosana'Gilt Edge' (variegated toad lily), Sedum spectabile'Hot Stuff' (stonecrop), Aconitum'Blue Lagoon' (monkshood) and Actaea simplex'Black Negligee' (bugbane).

Cohen didn't make it to the winter slides in her presentation, but she listed a few on her handout including the winter shrub Cornus stolonifera'Arctic Fire' (red-twig dogwood) and birch and elm trees for winter interest.

Look for more from the Nursery and Landscape Association speakers in the next few weeks!
