Fair at the Crossroads
ELKINS, W.Va. -- Fair at the Crossroads will celebrate the state's 150th birthday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 31 on the grounds of the historic Herman G. Kump house.
The all-day festival is a fundraiser for the Kump Education Center. The day begins with a tribute to the Daughters of the American Revolution, John Hart Chapter, which was instrumental in obtaining a recent $10,000 national DAR grant for continuing renovations to the home of the governor, who served in 1933-37.
The celebration will include actors portraying Gov. and Mrs. Francis Pierpont and an original historic drama about the politicking that led to the formation of West Virginia.
Other activities include an old-fashioned pie auction, croquet, face and marble painting, puppets and tours of the historic house from 10:20 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 5 p.m. Displays of early toys and demonstrations of 18th-century parlor games will take place.
Folk singers Carrie and Michael Kline will perform, as will the Elm Street Alley Cats. Artisan vendors and food booths will be set up on the south lawn.
The Kump House is located at the crossroads of highways U.S. 33, U.S. 219, U.S. 250, W.Va. 55 and W.Va. 92. Admission to the grounds and the event will be $10 for adults.
