Guys Night Out
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The tickets purchased by men who join a football tailgate at 11 a.m. Sept. 17 will benefit YWCA Sojourner's Shelter for Homeless Women and Families. Held on the grounds of McJunkin Red Man on Hillcrest Drive during the WVU/Maryland game, the event features a pig roast, wings contest, beer, wine, cigars, games and raffles and coverage of the game.
Tickets are $75 each in advance or $100 at the door. Tickets are available online at www.guysnightoutcharleston.com, or at 304-340-3553, at the YWCA at 1426 Kanawha Blvd., or at the event.
The YWCA Sojourner's Shelter provides emergency shelter and supportive services to homeless women, men and women with children, and intact families. YWCA Sojourner's works to eliminate homelessness and provide tools for self-sufficiency through education, counseling and other services.
Wine tasting
Josh Lavis of Trireme Importers will lead a tasting of Greek wines at 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at The Wine Shop in Capitol Market. Cost is $10 per person. Call 304-343-9463.
Expanding space
Bridge Road Bistro's expansion into the lower half of the space previously occupied by Kid Country Toys should be complete by Sept 15.
Country Roads Cook Off
Mike Perry, founder of the Heritage Farm Museum and Village in Huntington, is seeking chefs for The Country Roads Cook Off on Oct.1 at the farm. Guests will prepare traditional Appalachian recipe with a local main ingredient. Dishes must be prepared in cast iron cookware.

Entrants who prepare food for the wood fire division have two hours. Propane or butane stove division entries have one hour. Winners in each division will be awarded $150. The fan favorite winner receives $75.

Pie contest
Jacksons Mill Pie Contest will be held Saturday in the Southeast Learning Center on the campgrounds, just outside of Weston. Entries must be submitted between 2 and 3 p.m. and must contain a West Virginia product as the main ingredient in the filling. Commercially canned pie fillings will not be accepted.
Custard or any pies containing ingredients requiring refrigeration, such as cream cheese or whipped topping, will not be accepted. Submit one copy of the recipe with the pie.

Potato Festival
Nicholas County residents celebrate the local spuds crop with the annual Potato Festival Sept. 8 to 10 in Summersville. Events include a potato decorating contest, tater tot and mashed potato eating contests, potato sack race, parade and pet pageant.
