Blood, Sweat & Tears comes to the Clay Center in March 2009 as part of a 2008-09 Clay Center Presents season that also highlights country singer LeAnn Rimes and late-night comedian Chelsea Handler.
The season consists of a nine-event subscription season and two special events - Rimes and Handler - for which season-ticket buyers get first chance to buy. Season tickets offer a 20 percent discount for anyone buying all nine events and a 10 percent discount for those buying four or more events.
Don McLean, the creator of the iconic song "American Pie," will sing the song that took him from poor man to millionaire in a season that also marks the return of the singing group Naturally Seven, political satirists Capitol Steps, and Montana Repertory Theatre.
Clay Center Presents has scaled back the number of events from an ambitious but lightly attended opening season in 2003-2004.
This past season, events consistently brought in more people and money than expected, President and CEO Judy Wellington said at a Wednesday morning news conference.
"We've built an audience," she said. "We're still building an audience."
Wellington said the booking committee relies heavily on focus groups and audience surveys in making talent choices. "We're making a great effort to target a younger audience so they get used to coming here and build confidence in what we have to offer."
Naturally Seven returns for a third appearance because people keep asking for them, Wellington said.
The '70s folk-rock group America sold out this season, Wellington said. "That was our biggest surprise. Because of the interest in that era, we decided to bring in Blood, Sweat & Tears and Don McLean."
Although not part of the season, "Grease" opens at the Clay Center July 25 for a six-performance run staged by the Charleston Light Opera Guild.
Subscription sales go on sale in early June. Single-ticket sales begin July 19. Tickets for all nine events run $240, $184, and $128. Call 561-3570 or visit www.theclaycenter.org.
Here is the schedule:
Sept. 25, 7:30 p.m. - Naturally Seven, R&B, jazz and soul from innovative a cappella septet.
Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. - Omar Sosa Afreecanos Quartet, urban jazz with a Latin heart.
Nov. 9, 7 p.m. - Don McLean, singer/songwriter who created iconic song "American Pie."
