Tanner S. Boster of Hurricane was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on April 14 in a court of honor ceremony held at Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene.
Tanner S. Boster of Hurricane was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on April 14 in a court of honor ceremony held at Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene.
Boster is senior patrol leader of Boy Scout Troop 36, located at First Baptist Church in Hurricane, where he has been a troop member since 2004. He has completed 32 merit badges and has earned the Scuba BSA, Snorkeling BSA, Lifeguard BSA and Religious awards. He is also a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.
A freshman at Hurricane High School, Boster plans to continue his education majoring in the field of civil engineering.
He is the son of Steve and Debbie Boster and grandson of T.J. and Ruthann Boster as well as Mae Faulkner and the late Gene Faulkner of Hurricane.
MU fife and drum corps to perform today
Marshall University's John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps has been invited and will perform at Colonial Williamsburg's Drummer's Call Muster today. Drummer's Call will feature 13 corps from the United States and Canada, including The Army's Third United States Infantry Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps from Washington, D.C.
All participating corps will be in the Grand March at 11:45 a.m., the Grand Review (on stand) at 12:45 p.m. and the Torchlight Tattoo March at 7:45 p.m.
Dr. Wendell Dobbs, professor of music at Marshall, is the director of the John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps.
The John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps was created as an initiative of the John Deaver Drinko Academy and the Department of Music of Marshall University. During the past year the group has performed for sporting, civic and cultural events at Marshall University as well as in Charleston; Columbus, Ohio; and Richmond, Va.

The creation of the corps was inspired by two Marshall University alumnae, Lutricia Tampa Fields and Jennifer Raczok Bailey, who now perform with the world-renowned Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps in Washington, D.C.
Contractors group awards scholarships
The Contractors Association of West Virginia Scholarship Foundation distributed $13,500 this year to West Virginia college students pursuing an education and a career in construction or engineering. Recipients were selected on the basis of their academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience, financial need and interest in a construction industry career. Eligible schools are West Virginia University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Marshall University, Fairmont State University and Bluefield State College. Awards were presented at a luncheon held on March 19. Scholarships were awarded to:
Ken Hacker, a junior civil engineering student at Fairmont State University, is the recipient of the CAWV's $4,000 scholarship award for 2008.
Other scholarships and the amount of the awards went to the following students:
Marshall University: Matt Cayton and Corry Weaver, both received $500.
Fairmont State University: Joshua White, $1,000.
West Virginia University: Eric Baker, Richard Rohrssen and "Jeffrey" Dan Rollins, each received $500. Ben Walls received a $1,000 scholarship.
West Virginia Institute of Technology: Matthew Skeen, $2,000 and Jonathan West, $500.
The Foundation also awarded $1,000 to the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America and $500 each to three local vocational schools to assist in developing skilled trades people needed for the future. Schools receiving the award are Carver Career and Technical Education Center, Putnam Career and Technical Center and Roane-Jackson Technical Center.
