PHILLIPPI - An 18-year-old International Coal Group employee was killed Friday in West Virginia's third coal mining death of the year.
The death occurred at an ICG mine where federal officials just last week cited the company for not properly reporting an accident and preserving the accident scene, according to federal records.
State Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training spokeswoman Jama Jarrett identified the victim of the Friday afternoon accident as Adam Lanham.
Jarrett said Lanham was run over by a scoop - a piece of equipment used to load coal - at ICG's Sentinel Mine. She said Lanham only had five months of experience.
Jarrett also said Lanham's father and two brothers apparently work at the Barbour County mine as well. She said no other information was available Friday evening.
U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration records show Lanham is the 11th coal miner killed on the job in the United States this year.
Last year, the Sentinel Mine produced nearly 775,000 tons of coal with 120 workers.
Scott Depot-based ICG also owns the Sago Mine, where 12 miners died in a Jan. 2, 2006, explosion.
During an ongoing quarterly inspection that began April 1, MSHA officials cited the company for 46 alleged safety and health violations, according to agency records. MSHA inspectors cited the mine for 61 alleged violations during the previous complete inspection, conducted during the first quarter of 2008.
In four of the previous five calendar years, the Sentinel Mine reported accident rates that were significantly worse - up to 6.5 times higher - than the national average, according to MSHA data.
In a non-injury accident investigation that began May 21, MSHA cited the Sentinel Mine for not immediately reporting the accident and for a rule that requires operators to preserve accident scenes until authorities can investigate. Ventilation plan and machinery violations were also cited in that ongoing investigation, according to MSHA records. No details of the accident were immediately available.
