A public viewing area has been established for those wanting to watch Sunday morning's demolition by explosives of the two remaining smokestacks from the old FMC Corp. steam plant behind the South Charleston Rite Aid store.
Former FMC employees and others wishing to see or photograph the demolition of the two concrete stacks should gather in the parking lot of the old Union Carbide building on MacCorkle Avenue, across from White Dodge. The demolition is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m.
"We'll use about 40 pounds of dynamite per stack to bring them down," said Mark Bosell of Bianchi Industrial Services of Syracuse, N.Y.
Sirens will be sounded at 10 minutes, five minutes and one minute before the 8 a.m. blast, and an all-clear siren should be sounded within five minutes after the detonation.
Removal of the stacks will add about 8 acres for industrial development at the former FMC site, which is about 75 percent cleared, according to Bob Anderson, director of the South Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau.
