More than $40 million for highway and road projects in West Virginia has been added to a spending bill that cleared the Senate Appropriations Committee, U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd announced Monday.
The bill also includes $4.5 million to help Mountain State airports.
"Unfortunately, the president has not made a priority of roadways and infrastructure needs here at home," Byrd said. "I know that they will contribute to new economic development in our state, while providing safer travel for local residents and visitors."
Byrd added $10 million in funds for work on Corridor H to the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations fiscal 2009 bill. So far, Byrd has secured $341.2 million in federal funds to build Corridor H.
"With work now complete on all of our other corridors, we can focus our efforts on Corridor H," Byrd said. "Corridor H is a critically important undertaking for West Virginia."
Other funds in the new bill include:
$7 million for W.Va. 9 in the Eastern Panhandle.
$5 million for W.Va. 10 in Logan County.
$5 million to repair mud and rock slides along U.S. 60 in eastern Kanawha County.
$5 million each for the Coalfields Expressway and King Coal Highway in Southern West Virginia.
$2 million for the Kanawha Trestle Rail-Trail Project in Charleston.
$1.5 million for improvements to Potomac Street in Harpers Ferry.
$1 million for the Elkins Railyard Project.
