CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 100 professional botanists and amateur hobbyists are expected to attend a Native Orchid Conference July 18-21 in Morgantown. After a reception this evening and a business meeting Friday, the attendees will take field trips into Pennsylvania to search for more than 53 species of native orchids. About a fourth of the species should be in bloom and suitable subjects for photographs.
Speakers include Katherine Gregg of West Virginia Wesleyan College, James Bissell of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, John Freudenstein of Ohio State University, Larry Zettler of Illinois College, Ryan Walsh of Bowling Green State University, Douglas Jolley of Heathers, W.Va., Hal Horwitz of Richmond, Va., Clete Smith of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Tom Sampliner of Cleveland. They will cover scientific research as well as Appalachian culture, ecology and botany.
On Monday, attendees will visit native orchid sites in West Virginia, home of 43 species of native orchids, including a recently discovered species in Monroe County. The 400-mile trek includes stops in Randolph, Pocahontas and Nicholas counties.
