THURMOND, W.Va. -- New River Gorge National River authorities have identified the body of a Pennsylvania man who drowned in the New River.

Chief Ranger Gary Hartley says two fishermen discovered the body of 21-year-old Alfredo Garcia of West Chester, Pa., Monday morning.

Hartley says Garcia was with a group that planned to go rafting Friday. While waiting to begin the trip, some went to the river to swim. Hartley said Garcia tried to swim out to a rock, but the strong current pulled him under. He was not wearing a life jacket.

I have fished/waded this river for a few years now and you have to give it respect. Wear your lifevest, don't wade alone, wade in familiar water, don't be stupid and bring along beer, and don't wade across if there are more than two gates open at Bluestone.
