No blasting at Massey site yet, DEP says

Massey Energy has not yet begun blasting apart a Raleigh County mountain that environmental groups hope to preserve for a wind-power project, state officials said Wednesday.

Department of Environmental Protection officials said that any blasting at Massey's Bee Tree Surface Mine would not be allowed until the company obtains the rest of the required permit approvals. DEP inspectors visited the site Wednesday to confirm that blasting did not start, as environmental groups had feared that it might.

"They haven't done anything with regard to that permit," said Grant Connard, an inspector supervisor at DEP's Oak Hill regional office. "There's not been any disturbance on that permit."

Citizen groups are promoting construction of 220 2-megawatt wind turbines on Coal River Mountain ridges. A wind study, funded by North Carolina-based Appalachian Voices, concluded that the spot is a good location for a wind farm. The project, Whitesville-based Coal River Mountain Watch says, would create enough wind power to "keep the lights on" in 150,000 homes, "while preserving the mountain for future economic and community benefits."

But Richmond, Va.-based Massey holds two strip mine permits in the area, and is seeking two more, for a total mine area of more than 6,000 acres.

On Aug. 29, Massey published a legal notice announcing that it planned to begin blasting on Wednesday morning.

Environmental groups timed a public relations blitz - including e-mail alerts, op-ed pieces to newspapers, and calls to reporters around the country - to generate publicity the day before Wednesday's possible start of blasting. The groups urged Gov. Joe Manchin to intervene, and Manchin declined, with his spokeswoman saying the company already had all of the required permits.

But it turned out that Massey is missing several key permit approvals from DEP, and agency officials confirmed late Tuesday that any blasting would be considered illegal until those approvals are made. Massey did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

In reading the responses from “Hollergirl” it seems that she has asserted the view that all “strip workers” get “paid to blast, poison and flood people”. I am utterly amazed at the audacity and complete lack of knowledge about the mining industry (are you related to Ken Ward Jr.?) Additionally, I would venture to say that there are several thousand “strip miners” in this state that would strongly disagree with your comments. As for my children remembering what I have done…I KNOW they will. They will come to me someday, hug my neck and thank me for stepping up to the plate, standing for what is right and providing for their future. They will thank me for the college education they received during my years of steady employment. Lastly they will thank me for providing a work ethic as opposed to setting at home, milking government services, dreaming of new things to protest against and attempting to destroy the state of West Virginia though false tree-hugging and eco-terrorism.

By the way--the mountain does NOT belong to Massey. Even if it did, a property owner does not have the right to lower my property value by blasting me, dusting me and flooding me out. Massey or Rowland can not conduct business on their property that harms me. Strip mining does just that--destroys. I (or any property owner) have a right as a property owner to do what I want on my property as long as it does NOT harm others. Strip mining harms others--end of story.

Sadly, the people that are profitting from the destruction of this state are unwilling even to see that their jobs will soon be gone as they are mining themselves out of a job and out of a home. We treehuggers are trying to prepare for a post coal economy. I would ask the coal minions what will they do when the coal is soon gone? I live in the middle of this mess and I see the polluted water and the mess the coal industry is leaving our children and the taxpayers to clean up. I work hard to try to make this state sustainable rather than out getting paid to blast, poison and flood people like strip workers do. Their destruction will go down in history as this is all being documented--the whole world is watching. Your kids will remember what you did.

The mountain is not the property of environmental groups to direct the future of. Massy has the rights to mine this property as the land owner has either leased or sold this property to Massey Energy. What part of this do you not understand? Sadly we set on such an abundant energy resource yet are apparently too weak mined to see through the rhetoric and realize that a few tourists floating down the New River are not going to support this state. We allow the voices of “a few” in addition to the twisted, biased and blatant inflammatory journalistic ramblings of select reporters attempting to make a name for themselves (yes Ken Ward Jr., I am referring to you) to form our opinions and direct our future. While the rest of us are actually out working and holding on to steady employment, these environmental group members are out painting signs, hugging trees and making up new slogans to chant as hard working West Virginias drive by on their way to legitimate jobs.
